Insert for 1.3 Stephen Paddock

INSERT goes:
Stephen was untrained, unschooled, behind from a state assessment standpoint, but young, if he proved to be teachable, he might be useful.
AFTER HERE

Wonk told Yolanda about Stephen, she seemed amused. We have done something similar. Good luck with your project, our experience has been this is more successful when they are younger. Maybe a good dose of international experience will set him right, or kill him if not. Tell you what. An organization I am associated with made some investments in a canal in Madagascar; all and all it was a failure. However, before he died, my grandfather purchased a gazillion hectares, much of it waterfront on the canal for centimes on the franc. Most of it sits idle in disrepair. We still make some revenue off cargo up and down the Canal des Pangalanes. Maybe life as a boat boy will give him a new perspective on life. Say the word, I can arrange the papers. He won't get out of line, I can tell you that.

Wonk agreed. Stephen, a real tough guy from America, woke up a few mornings later in a bamboo hut, somewhere in a jungle inland on the canal. Running away wasn't really an option, for one thing, he had no shoes. For another, there were no roads. He didn't speak French or Malagasy, they didn't speak English. He soon figured out he had to work to eat, rice if he was lucky, or maybe yams. Fish sometimes, if it was a special day, goat. After a few months, and proving he could do the tasks, he helped man a lateen rigged boutre, carrying coffee, charcoal, whatever, up and down the canal. After a year, a representative from an Up and Outpost came to speak with a much leaner version of Stephen, the first English conversation he had in a year. Would you like to chat about your future, the man asked. Yes, Stephen replied, I would like to start by reverting to my birth name, Charles Vanderbilt.
