Madagascar insert into 1.2 DONE

INSERT just before:

Gloria played Peer Gynt Suite on the way home, Wonk didn’t talk much.

On the other side of the world,  The 30 m catamaran Lazy Susan, pulled into the bay of Nosy Be's. ("Nosy" is the Malagasy word for island), one town, Hell-ville. High tide, many a boat as met the shoals close by. Took the dingy to the top of the ramp to meet with the police, who handle immigration.

This is no luxury cruise, these are scientists and beekeepers working to understand the reasons for recent deaths amongst honeybees, Apis Mellifera in the area.  These are not the docile European honeybees, African honeybees are more aggressive to beekeepers and are rarely confined to man-made hives. The majority of their colonies is wild and lives in natural cavities in trees or the ground.

Over thousands of years, the honey has been collected, in fact, it is sold in bulk, (bring your own container), at several of the local Chinese food shops. But the supply is slowly dwindling.

Work at the African Reference Laboratory for Bee Health in Nairobi, Kenya, indicates that with a few lifestyle changes and breeding for physiological traits  the currently susceptible populations can survive and thrive in the presence of the parasite. the mite,Varroa Destructor.

Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world. Educating subsistence farmers simply isn't going to work at a large scale. Instead, an Up and Outpost educational center outside of Hell-ville prepared locals for training in Nairobi. working with successful bee populations in Africa that are able to co-exist with the mite. They are coming home to reproduce the work on a preserve about 30 kilometers to the South. If successful, the hope is that other farmers will mimic their practices.
