ACT I Summary

Act I, Chapters 1 - 5,  26 + 26 + 37 + 32 + 31 = 152 pages

= = = Preface

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that happened before Nightfall. This history is based on unaltered records just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the Blue Circle. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning and decided to write an orderly account for you.

We will begin with a seemingly insignificant event before the great census which most historians point to as the beginning of the unraveling of the second gilded age.

04/04/18 Author note: the writing challenge in Act I is to introduce the characters and plot elements without being too boring. Further work in this section of the book will involve small sections for "short story" style spruce ups.

Story opens with Carla, a soon to be Net Girl and a meet cute with Chara, another. They meet Clara, Yolanda and Frank Benin and one of two IT threads, networking: off Internet, Internet, LOS, sneakernet is established via the Net Girls construct.

Best friends Wonk and Guy enter the picture with Shari, (throwaway character) and the idea that Wonk is big on business, (Curvaceous coffee), with multiple instances and Guy is IT SW saavy is established. We learn Wonk met Reverend Chase Slocom earlier at summer camp and has stayed in touch. Chase will be an important figure as an enigmatic spiritual leader throughout book one.

Wonk meet Gloria Silver, rich Jewish girl, working in a jewelry store, lusts after her, but also takes note of the opportunity to disrupt retail jewelry. She takes the lead in opening his first jewelry store, Bestow.

Wonk agrees to go with Gloria to a Bat Mitzvah, his first peek into Jewish life, he gets laid for the first time with Yolanda, who collects boys in several sense of the word including their sperm for her Children of Yolanda project, (mostly a book II thing). We introduce Clara Bow, relationship concierge, who will travel in Yolanda's orbit. We introduce Traveler and Cody Boy, they will become friends and partners with Wonk.

Rhea, Guy's mom, a lower scale super influencer, is losing her primary job, but she does get an opportunity to raise Bandi Boy, a Blue Circle service dog. She replaces Gloria as manager for Bestow.

The origin and meaning of HNMNBie and the movement are introduced in a couple of doses. The goal is to create a hapless, doomed, movement that many readers can identify with. They do a lot of good things, but lack what it takes to survive the forces of the time and political criticism.

We have the briefest mention of Madagascar in chapter II. The reader will probably wonder why, since we do not develop it immediately, but that is coming soon and in spades. Guy and robodog run into robot hating ruffians. Robusts are a fringe group, while not central to the story, they are an important source of antagonism. We also introduce the idea of a robot defending its master and Botxennials, (millenials that grew up with robots).

Yolanda buys Lilian Russel News, renames it to the HNMNBie News Network. Ms. Russel and Clara Bow will become Yolanda's close in staff.

Traveler and Wonk go to hear a DISC lecture, but decide there must be at least one more preference, the builder. In terms of animals: Lion, Otter, Beaver, Retriever, and they add Crow.

In chapter 3 we establish that both Traveler and Wonk are martial artists, but not comic book super heros, in fact Traveler is a hemophiliac. The bad guy of the event, had been calling himself Stephen Paddock after the Vegas shooter, (he is a ritfilistan ADHD child), but as he finds a life, after being sent to Madagascar as a boatman, returns to his birth name of Charles Vanderbilt.

Wonk sees a sign for a lecture by Dr. Clara Bow, we are gently introducing Up and Out in its various forms.

Traveler is harassed to do some work on his AI assistant. His real world assistant and Guy pitch in to help train EVE.AI which becomes very important to him as time progresses.

Back in time jump 3 years, (could figure out a smarter way to do it), Traveler is showing Gizmo, on of his deceased father's close friends the latest advance in sequestering carbon into carbon fiber. This might be useful in tactical clothes.

The faith of Traveler and Gizmo in God through Jesus is established even though they worship differently.

More development of the HNMNBie movement, it was supposed to be a joke. Yolanda, Traveler's godmother, begins to explain what he is and the business opportunity, (supplying carbon fiber for RVs), that he has. Wonk is begining to piece together perhaps his most important business idea, the PSE based on a scene from the Godfather. Soon he will be in coffee, haircuts/tactical clothes fitting, jewelry, safety and protection and expensive tours for rich people, a significant enterprise.

Wonk faces the issue of For The Children. He decides to eliminate all .223 and large capacity magazines from his armory. He also reflects on the larger issue and calling.

In Madagascar, the rats that were injected with human brain cells succeed in communicating with mankind via Charles Vanderbilt. We also learn that a substantial investment in a store for riches is being developed in Madagascar, Depository II.

Guy, with the business card Clara gave Traveler, meets the Net Girls.

Wonk meet Fozia in WinCo, pockets a business card.

Yolanda and Angelica, leaders of the HNMNBie movement discuss meeting with, having a closer relationship with the Social Justice party and their Pact.

The iBone, Blue Circle dog communication device is invented and we see the inventor operates in the Net Girl orbit. Guy comes on to Clara, no thanks, (he has a far different experience with other Net Girls).

Wonk is in college, they are allowing him to use his actual businesses as the projects. We veer from briefing the professor to thinking about Blue Circle. She asks him if the protection side of the business is really worth the ramp up. Wonk struggles with that question, but continues to believe.

Wonk is thinking about what he learned when Gloria walks up and invites him to Roost, something important to discuss. We meet Harold the photographer at Urban Timber. Gloria who does not date the boss, tells him she is leaving for Israel. Rhea, Guy's mother, will be taking over Bestow, his jewelry stores.

We learn that Gloria is born of a Jewish mother, Yolanda, High Table, was carried by the same mother, but does not have her DNA. They aren't "really" sisters. Mention of Yolanda's children, and that Yolanda has a bent towards the mystical.

Gloria and Yolanda talk, the plot thickens about the smart rats in Madagascar, but Depository II is moving forward.

Wonk is a mess, he did, or thinks he did love Gloria. Traveler knows to take him on a road trip as a side junket to go visit Skip in Nevada. Traveler, Cody and Wonk witness a mudslide, this becomes important later in the book.

We have introduced the Social Justice party, now we need the flat earth and Kelsey Kegel.

Traveler goes to a semi-mandatory Blue Circle birthday party, we continue to develop this structure.

Wonk gets beat up by thugs from Pussy Galore, he is more sure than ever about the protection side of his business. Visits with Slocom, can people hear from God?

Hapless Harold scores a gig doing boudoir photography, with none other than Yolanda.

Traveler and Reverend Slocom meet. Traveler sends him a Presence node.

Chapter 5 closes Act I, an important focus is the Initial Coin Offering of H Coin. A number of very powerful, rich people descend on a rustic resort with wall their understated high tech wizardry. The coin is created and trustmarked by Controller from Crypto Valley. Gizmo and Traveler already have some angst, God we trust was replaced by trust your higher power.

Angelica and Traveler, establish some sort of relationship, it is not that strong. However, she does agree to visit firecamp and see if developing a line of robots to assist in fighting wildfires makes sense.

There is a really important small paragraph that defines Yolanda spiritually up to that point, not really Jewish, used to be NeoPuritan, an enneagram score of 8, now chasing Kaballah.

Wonk sleeps with Yolanda for the second time. The theme is tantra. He asks three questions.
1)   What do you plan to do with your branch
2)   What are the Children of Yolanda
3)   Am I a clone

Part of the group goes on a field trip to Ocean Shores. They encounter a deranged robot. They discuss what happens when robots encounter unexpected events. Unknown.

Eli Gallen's portraits and interest by the church of AI comes up. A strange message comes in repeating one sent in the distant past relating to the firing of Andrew McCabe. Solving this message is another example of Wonk's growth.

The chapter ends with Traveler and Angelica on the fireline. Wildfires are a huge problem with climate change, can her company product robots that will help? She realizes she was born for such a time as this, wildfires were out of control.

As we come to the end of Act I, we don't really have a villain. The worst offenders so far are Robusts and at the micro level, the pussy galore thugs. We know some ambiguous Deep State sometimes works against what we would expect to be right. Neither the Social Justice party or Flat Earth has it really right, we lean a bit more to justice. There have been indications that climate change is making life harder.

In Act II, we don't have to introduce as many people and groups and can continue to develop characters and plot story. Yolanda is going to keep gravitating towards the dark side which is hard on the group, most have a relationship that has to adjust. Deep State gets more active, as do the Robusts. We also develop the problem of an unwise government and the harm, many times, was caused in the past. Debt becomes a bigger issue as does climate change.
